Public Event: Thomas Franck Lecture by Sir Michael Wood

The Berlin Potsdam Research Group “The International Rule of Law – Rise or Decline?” takes great pleasure in inviting you to a public lecture by Sir Michael Wood , former member of the UN International Law Commission, on

"Values in the International Community: Jus cogens in light of the International Law Commission’s 2022 Conclusions".

Jus cogens remains something of a mystery, but one that only arises infrequently in the practice of international law. It nevertheless has the potential to cause great uncertainly in the minds of judges and others. How far has the recent work of the International Law Commission shed at least some light on the matter? What action should the UN General Assembly take with regard to the ILC’s 2022 Conclusions on the subject?

Sir Michael Wood has been a member of the United Nations International Law Commission from 2008 to 2022. He was the principal Legal Adviser to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom between 1999 and 2006. He spent three years at the UK Mission to the UN in New York, dealing chiefly with Security Council matters. Since leaving the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, he has acted for many governments in cases before the International Court of Justice, European Court of Human Rights, International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and inter-state arbitral tribunals.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, 4 May 2023, at 6.15 pm at lecture hall 1072, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Unter den Linden 6.
