Upcoming Public Event: Thomas Franck Lecture by Professor Joseph Weiler
The Berlin Potsdam Research Group "The International Rule of Law - Rise or Decline?"
takes great pleasure in inviting you to a public lecture by Professor Joseph Weiler, New York University, on
"Is the Church of European Integration facing a Reformation?".
If it were only, say, the Polish court – we could dismiss it as a local pathology. But when it’s
the highest courts in e.g. Denmark, the Czech Republic, Italy, France and even the august
German CC – what explains this judicial Intifada? And when Euroscepticism moves from the
lunatic fringe to normal politics, is dubbing it “Populism” enough to explain this Revolt of
the Masses? Some honest soul searching is necessary.
Joseph Weiler is Professor as well as holder of the European Union Jean Monnet Chair at New York University and Co-Director of the Jean Monnet Center for International and Regional Economic Law & Justice. In addition, he is Honorary Professor at the National University of Singapore, the University College London and the University of Copenhagen. From 2013 to 2016, he was President of the European University Institute (EUI), in Florence. His research focus is on issues of European integration, globalization and democracy. His numerous publications include, inter alia,"European Constitutionalism Beyond the State" (ed. with Marlene Wind, CUP 2003), "Integration in an Expanding European Union: Reassessing the Fundamentals" (ed. with Ian Begg and John Peterson, Blackwell 2003) and "The European Court of Justice" (ed. with Grainne de Burca, OUP 2001).
The lecture will take place on Thursday, 8 December 2022, at 6.15 pm at lecture hall C, Henry Ford Building, Freie Universität Berlin (Garystraße 35, 14195 Berlin).
We look forward to welcoming you.
