9 June 2018: Panel Discussion “Human Rights in Crisis – Challenged Human Rights Protection as Sign of a Transformation of International Law?”

As part of the Long Night of the Sciences (Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften) on 9 June 2018, the Research Group hosted a panel discussion about

“Human Rights in Crisis – Challenged Human Rights Protection as Sign of a Transformation of International Law?”.

70 years after the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the fate of international human rights seems to be uncertain. Regional courts like the European Court of Human Rights and universal UN Human Rights bodies are increasingly criticized by states and members of civil society. Is this a short-term phenomenon concerning a long-term development towards an ever growing juridification of human rights protection? Or is this a sign of a fundamental change in global structures? Can (and should) international law still play a significant role in furthering the values of human rights?

Panelists: Prof. Pierre d’Argent (University of Louvain), Prof. Andrew Hurrell (University of Oxford), Prof. Paolo Palchetti (University of Macerata)

Chair: Dr. Nina Reiners (University of Potsdam)
